U by Kotex Tween

I cannot believe this is my last post as a Kotex ambassador! What a ride this has been! Six months ago when I accepted this opportunity it was with a light heart. I had briefly discussed "the talk" with my daughter but had never stopped to think of the many issues a young girl may face as she begins to become a young lady! Having long forgot the challenges.

This campaign opened my eyes and helped me to discover ways to connect with my child. I recently discovered that I do not spend as much one on one time with my nine year old as I should. She needs me to stop and make her the focus instead of trying to harness the unimportant situations I have no control over. I do have control over how I chose to spend time with my little girl who is growing up way to fast! I never imagined becoming an ambassador for this program would open doors that I had long puzzled over! My daughter is more open and willing to give feedback  and I feel that if and when necessary she will be comfortable approaching me with any questions she may have!

I was able to emotionally connect with this campaign, because the issues we were given to discuss over the last few months are real, and could happen at any time! I feel more confident and found myself wanting to reach out to other moms who will also be in my shoes soon! What a special time for a mom and daughter!

We recently spent the afternoon on the town courtesy of Mom Central! We hit our favorite local bakery Apple Spice and enjoyed each others company in a way we had not had the opportunity to in months! What an amazingly smart and talented young girl I have! Stopping to giggle and share secrets! That afternoon we reestablished confidence in one another. Before my eyes this once toothless little baby doll has become and is becoming someone very special!

I was given the chance through this campaign to develop the tools I will need to help her learn. Given courage to embrace change. Taught tolerance for those not so shiny moments, and of course reminded how quickly we need to be prepared to let them grow! For helpful tips and tools for your family please visit U by Kotex educate yourself on the facts. Prepare your daughter for upcoming changes! Also be sure to visit the Kotex site for useful tools such as calenders and a full line of great products! Again this has been an immense opportunity! One I will never forget!

Good Luck!

Important Tips!

So have you had the talk yet?

Are you still waiting? Or have you had the talk and now are approaching advanced territory? Approaching the subject of periods with your young daughter can be intimidating! Living in a neighborhood that is made up predominantly of girls, the other moms in the area and I have stood in our driveways anxiously discussing each others tactics. How scary! The best advice is to be prepared! Educate yourself and be confident when you approach your daughter!

Last month Kotex Ambassadors were asked to touch on tips for your daughter if she is at school when her period begins! The feedback was amazing and moms want more! We are all in this together! Informing each other and providing a shoulder. This month the focus is on monthly maintenance, which is so important! Preparing beforehand is one thing! Preparing after her period has begun can be unnerving and leave her feeling less than confident! Prepare her for the scenarios she may face! That way, while she may be nervous she will have your voice in her head reassuring her she will be alright! As always when in need turn to the Kotex Tween website for any information you may need!

Monthly maintenance, what is monthly maintenance to a young girl? You and I understand the importance of cleanliness but not so long ago your little girl was just that...a little girl with wild hair and mud in between her toes! It may not occur to her and be alarming to discover personal hygiene. Encourage her without bruising tender self esteem to use deodorants and mild soaps to keep herself clean and smelling great! It is also important while teaching hygiene to let her know how important it is to stay on top of changing her pad. Using her school emergency kit, pack plenty of liners to ensure she will never be shorthanded. If she is staying with a friend remind her to be prepared! In the event she is unable to change her pad in a timely manner be sure to tell her to stay calm and grab the next opportunity to excuse herself to the bathroom. If necessary let her know it is OK to find someone she trusts to help her navigate the situation should she be away from home.

It is a great idea to teach your daughter how to react in the event of an accident. It has happened to all of us at one time or another. Remind her that it will be Ok! If she would feel better about it, let her take a spare change of clothing to keep in her locker just in case! The ice cold water trick is a quick fix that your daughter can easily apply if needed.

This is an amazing time in your young daughters life! Try to remember that when she slams the door in your face and proceeds to bawl hysterically about the most minimal of things! Put your arm around her and let her know you understand! Let her get familiar with the happenings of her body by orienting herself with the Hello Period website  Teach her to recognize the signs her period may be nearing. If it would be helpful, create a calendar with her that will help her track her period so she knows when to expect it. This will also help any men in your house to know when to avoid the home... Not really but a father experiencing his hormonal daughter is certainly an experience!

With the proper tools and knowledge, together we will survive!

  Preparing for the talk!

Preparing for the Unexpected!

Just like that another Summer has come and gone!

Our young ladies are back in school! Ready to face locker combinations, mystery meat and gym class! Hopefully they have prepared and are eagerly facing each day with confidence! How do you prepare her for the unexpected?

Preparing your daughter so she does not have to be embarrassed if she gets her first period in school is as easy as educating yourself and handling questions and concerns with a few simple tips! Preparing a school survival kit that contains the basics and a few extra's is one way to give her reassurance! Small on-the-go products that can be easily unnoticed in her school survival kit, locker or backpack! The U by Kotex Tween pads are small and discreet! Click the image below for information on the U by Kotex Tween products available from Kotex.

Become familiar with the facts and educate your daughter with "the talk"  using tools like the Hello Period page on the U by Kotex website. A website designed specifically to give the facts and answer questions. When a comfortable moment presents itself be sure to give her tips to survive her period at school. Give her examples of the warning signs, teaching her how to recognize symptoms and reduce those surprise moments! Get the straight answers to all your period questions – U by Kotex*

Teach her how to handle the situation by first remaining calm. Write your daughter a note and slip it into her survival kit. Reminding her that she will be OK. Pack a small plastic bag with a low dose of ibuprofen for her to take only in the event she begins at school. This will help with minor cramping until she gets home to her comfort zone and awaiting hot pad! Prepare her with tips on how to clean up any stained garments, and remind her to keep calm if this happens. We all know the cold water trick! If it helps her feel better have her keep a spare pair of clothing in her locker.

The chances of our daughters first periods presenting themselves while she is in school are very real and very likely! Being prepared with the facts will help her stay calm and remain confident!

Where do we begin?

    Remember this?

Remember those soft squishy toothless gums? Remember that drooling tiny smile? Can you remember when she would stand on her tippy toes and raise her chubby arms certain you would scoop her up and kiss her sweet face...

    Smile, sigh...and come back!

That once sweet little pink bundle is now a blonde haired, blue eyed ball of emotions. Been on a roller coaster lately? That once sweet smile now replaced by a pout. Those sweet little babbles now back talk and criticism. Our little girls are becoming little ladies.

As a U by Kotex tween ambassador I have been truly enlightened. I always assumed I had all the information I would need in my possession. I figured I have been there done that and my experience thus far as a woman myself would be enough. For me this has been somewhat true and somewhat false...

Each little girl is unique. The best way we can gain the confidence needed to help them traverse the upcoming changes is to become armed with knowledge. When you put knowledge and experience hand in hand you have the tools needed to be a resource to your young daughter.

So, how do you approach the very intimidating and obviously awkward conversation? I never remember having "The talk" with my own mother and it only makes me more certain that it is a conversation I must inform myself on to have with my own child. We have already skimmed the surface. Not wanting to overwhelm or give unnecessary information I have let my daughter take the lead. If she feels uncomfortable she knows we are going at her pace and she can ask me any questions she may have.

    Be prepared...

As an ambassador I received a six month supply of the U by Kotex tween pads for our household. The curiosity as well as blushing cheeks told me we were on the right track and headed for preparedness. My poor husband, who is the only male in the house looked for a chair to crawl under!

When I asked my daughter what made her the most nervous about her period she said she was worried it might hurt and that it was "gross" I reassured her that it was a natural process that happens to each woman. Being nine also maybe will give her some time to get used to the idea. Hopefully she will have time to, with my guidance inform herself of what will be happening. Gaining confidence in her body.

The last thing we want to do as mothers is break down the trust and dialogue between ourselves and our daughters. However there are of course still going to be those questions that they may not know how to ask. The U by Kotex tween and the Hello period sites are amazing resources. A place for questions and answers! A place to share experiences and get the facts.

Smile, sigh and know you are doing your best!

Just preparing yourself to be your daughters guide is an amazing task in and of it's self!

Go Moms!

Preparing for "The talk"

Have you had the talk yet?

Our little girls are growing up so fast! How do we prepare for those awkward moments. When is the right time to approach your growing young woman? Thankfully we are not alone! The Kotex site is a wonderful resource, providing answers to those questions your daughter may not know how to ask!

One way to approach the talk is to prepare a kit for your daughter. With back to school around the corner what a unique way to prepare her for whatever she may encounter throughout her school year! Find a cute cosmetics bag, these cute little bags were provided to my daughters by Mom Central They contain the necessities for any girl! A nail file to keep those carefully manicured nails smooth! Three neon band aids...just in case! A pop out hair brush to tame unruly locks! Two hair scrunchies for gym...first thing in the morning! Bleh!

What else can you put in her school preparedness kit? How about a few U by Kotex tween pads....also just in case! Nestled deep in her cosmetics bag safely in her back pack is the confidence of knowing she will be prepared!

This is just one way to bring up what can be a awkward and intimidating conversation with your daughter! There are so many great ways to approach her. What are your favorite mother daughter activities? Sometimes while running errands my daughter and I have the chance to get into conversations. I cautiously proceed with conversations to get a feel for her comfort level. If I feel she is not comfortable we continue to talk about Taylor Lautner and bubble gum instead!

I know my child is comfortable approaching me, but I also know she has many questions that she does not know how to ask. Sometimes I also do not know how answer certain questions! When a quick and easy to follow reference is needed I am grateful for the Hello Period website by Kotex. Here we can find honest facts and relateable stories from other young women who are going through the same situations!

Just learning and educating yourself enables you to be a very valuable resource to your daughter. Have the confidence needed to answer her questions. This in turn will also help her to be confident when her time comes! Good luck ladies!

U by Kotex Tween Ambassador program!

I am happy to announce my participation as a product ambassador in the U by Kotex Campaign! Who would have thought that one day we would be facing "the talk" I mean we knew it was inevitable, but to sneak up on us so soon! I initially hesitated when considering my participation in this campaign. Part denial. Part confusion! Step mother to a beautiful daughter! Mother to two precious little ladies! It was hard to deny that this campaign was important!

U by Kotex has an amazing website! A site that will prepare you for the changing events your daughter will face. I personally have used this website in my own home! Having the U by Kotex site available has been handy for unexpected questions. There is also an easy to understand product overview!

If you have not visited Nickelodeon Parents Connect you need to! There is a wonderfully relatable video featuring Aimee Teegarden! I loved this video! Short, sweet and very much to the point! I am similar to Amee's mother in the way that I am fairly upfront and do not like to sugar coat. These things are going to happen and being educated and prepared is one of the best approaches we as mothers can have!

 "We're Not Perfect We're Parents!"

Last fall when as girls do...the little girls in our neighborhood began talking I knew it was time to give some straight talk on the facts. I armed myself with as much information as I could! A follow up visit to the family doctor also helped confirm what we had discussed as a family (husband excluded;) Later when our oldest daughter was faced with the annual grade school maturation she was not in as much shock as many of her little girlfriends.

I am happy to be participating in this important campaign! We are looking forward to working with the Kotex brand! Whether or not you have had the talk, are contemplating  the talk ....or just know it is in your future! Stay tuned!
